Lake Mburo National Park

Destination

Lake Mburo National Park is a modest but lovely gem, ideally located near the highway that connects Kampala to Uganda’s western parks. It is the tiniest of Uganda’s savannah national parks, with old Precambrian metamorphic rocks dating back over 500 million years forming the foundation. There are 350 bird species to be seen there, as well as zebra, impala, eland, buffalo, oribi, Defassa waterbuck, leopard, hippo, hyena, topi, and reedbuck. The National Park of Lake Mburo is a fantastic spot to visit.

Overview

Overview

One of Uganda's most stunning and breathtaking game parks is located in the centre of a large thick acacia woodland. The Lake Mburo National Park is a unique site with a diverse range of habitats, including arid hillsides, rocky outcroppings, thickets, open and wooded savannas, woodland, lakes, and swamps. In a tropical setting, its sculpted scenery, rolling hills and lovely lake coastlines, forest galleries, seasonal and permanent marshes, and grassy valleys all sustain a plethora of wildlife. Lake Mburo National Park, at only 370 km2, is modest in compared to many other East African parks, yet it is home to a startling diversity of plants and animals, including some mammals and birds found nowhere else in Uganda. These diverse ecosystems are home to a diverse range of fauna, including 68 mammal species.

Impalas and Burchell's zebras are only found in Lake Mburo and Queen Elizabeth National Parks, and topi are only found in Lake Mburo and Queen Elizabeth National Parks. Warthogs, buffalos, oribi, defassa, waterbucks, reedbucks, and eland antelopes are all common animal species. Leopards and hyenas can also be found, while lions have returned to the park after being nearly extinct due to hunting. Hippos and crocodiles frequent the park's five lakes, while bordering wetlands conceal papyrus specialists like the sitatunga antelope and papyrus gonolek. Shoebill, papyrus yellow warbler, African finfoot, saddle-billed stork, brown-chested wattled plover, Carruther's cisticola, Tabora cisticola, great snipe, Abyssinian ground hornbill, and white-winged warbler are among the park's 332 bird species. Birds of the Acacia woodland are particularly well represented.

RESIDENTS OF THE AREA

The Banyankole, along with Bairu growers and Bahima herders, are the park's dominant ethnic group. Bakooki, Baganda agriculturalists, Bakiga, and Banyarwanda are among the other groups.
ATTRACTIONS

Mburo Lake

Boat tours of Lake Mburo's eastern coasts are available, departing from a jetty at a lakeside campsite near Rwonyo. During the two-hour journey, keep an eye out for crocodiles and hippopotamus. Pelicans, herons, the cormorant fish eagle, and possibly the uncommon fin foot and shoebill storks are among the species that can be seen. By arrangement, fishermen with their own equipment may fish in the lake from the campsite.

Lakes of Salt

The park around Rwonyo is explored on guided walks, ending in a visit to a natural salt lake inhabited by wildlife. A wooden observation platform makes viewing easier.

Tracks from video games

A network of game tracks serves Lake Mburo's eastern hinterland, where a variety of savannah animals and birds can be seen. Impalas are the most common animals to be observed along the impala track, whereas zebras frequent the grassy valley bottoms that the zebra track passes through. This leads to the Ruroko route, which runs through rock kopjes where the elusive Klipspringer can be found. The lakeside trail in the south of the park leads to Kigarama hill, which offers a panoramic view of Lake Mburo, passing through deep woods that is home to bushbuck and bush duiker. This lake, as well as seven others, may be seen from the Kazuma overlook, which is near to the Kazuma trail.

Rubanga forest is located in the Rubanga National Park.

Despite its tiny size, this forest on Lake Mburo's western shore offers a taste of tropical high forest with closed canopy and is home to a variety of forest birds species.

ACTIVITIES

Nature walks, bird watching, boat excursions, and game drives are all popular activities.
