At 4,000km2, Mt. Elgon has the world’s largest volcanic base. On the Uganda-Kenya border, it is also the oldest and largest isolated volcanic summit in East Africa. Its immense bulk is a sight to behold, spanning 80 kilometres and rising more than 3,000 metres over the surrounding plains. The mountain’s cool peaks provide relief from the hot plains below, while the higher elevations provide a shelter for plant and wildlife. Mount Elgon National Park is home to over 300 bird species, including the endangered Lammergeyer. Small antelopes, forest monkeys, elephants, and buffalos live on the slope. Mount Elgon National Park is a fantastic destination.
