Murchison Falls

Tailor-Made Safari Holiday

Murchison Falls National Park is the best game park in Uganda for a vacation. It is located in two districts in northwestern Uganda: Masindi in the west and Nwoya in the north. It is Uganda’s largest national park, covering 3,480 square kilometres. The park is located 300 kilometres from Uganda’s capital city, Kampala. Murchison Falls National Park, Bugungu and Karuma Falls wildlife reserves are all part of the Murchison Falls Conservation Area (MFCA).

The Nile divides Uganda’s largest park, which contains untamed wilderness and savannah. The MFNP is home to over 76 mammal and 451 bird species; the Nile Riverbanks are home to hippos, buffalos, waterbucks, and crocodiles. Murchison’s vegetation consists of savannah and woodland. Lions, giraffes, chimps, hippos, leopards, elephants, antelopes, and bird species can all be found in this area. Murchison Falls is the name given to the point where the Nile, the world’s longest river, is channelled through a narrow gorge within the Rift Valley, descending nearly 50 metres below. Sir Roderick Murchison (1851–1853), President of the Royal Geographical Society, inspired the park’s name. It was the impetus for many explorations within ‘colonial’ Africa, most notably the search for the Nile’s source.

The national park is also known as Kabalega National Park. Kabalega ruled the Bunyoro Kingdom as Omukama from 1870 to 1899. He was a staunch opponent of British colonisation. The British arrested him and exiled him to the island nation of Seychelles. Murchison Falls National Park has attracted well-known international visitors and has been used in film productions. Winston Churchill, Prince of Wales, Edward VII in 1930, and Queen Mother in 1959 are just a few examples.

In 1951, a film was shot with background scenery of the Murchison Falls, starring Humphrey Bogart in John Huston’s well-known film. Another film, African Queen, was shot in the vicinity of the Murchison Nile and Lake Albert. The park is home to a variety of wild animals, including the “big 5,” which include leopards, buffaloes, elephants, and lions. This park once housed rhinos, which became extinct in 1983 because of poaching and wars in Uganda at the time.
