Source of the Nile
Tailor-Made Safari Holiday
The Nile, the world’s longest river and the source of life for many ancient civilizations, has a magical quality to it. The source of the Nile, which was only hazily alluded to in Ptolemy’s ancient works, was one of the great geographical mysteries of the Victorian Age. Closer to home, the Nile River offers superb Whitewater rafting and animal fishing as it flows downriver from Jinja, Uganda. Look into the Nile’s beginnings.
The Nile has two major tributaries: the White Nile, which starts in Jinja near Lake Victoria, and the Blue Nile. The White Nile has traditionally been regarded as the headwaters stream. However, the Blue Nile is the source of the majority of the Nile’s downstream water, accounting for 80 percent of the water and silt. The White Nile is the longer of the two rivers and rises in the Great Lakes region. It starts in Uganda with Lake Victoria and travels through Uganda and South Sudan. The Blue Nile begins in Ethiopia at Lake Tana and flows southeast into Sudan. The two rivers merge in Khartoum, Sudan’s capital.
The river flows entirely north through the Sudanese desert to Egypt, where Cairo is located on its large delta, and then into the Mediterranean Sea at Alexandria. Since ancient times, Egyptian civilization and Sudanese kingdoms have relied on the river and its annual flooding. The majority of Egypt‘s population and cities are concentrated in the Nile valley north of the Aswan Dam. Almost all of Ancient Egypt’s cultural and historical sites developed and can be found along riverbanks. The Nile, along with the Rhône and Po, is one of the three largest Mediterranean rivers in terms of water discharge.
